Minimum Safety Equipment Requirements

The following list outlines the minimum safety equipment required on
Canoes & Kayaks. You may want to bring more equipment based on your type of boat, your activity and the current and forecasted weather and water conditions. You can review the equipment you must carry aboard your boat and get specific
information about each piece.

PERSONAL LIFESAVING APPLIANCES
One (1) lifejacket or PFD for each person on board.
One (1) reboarding device

(See Note 1)
One (1) buoyant heaving line at least 15 m (49’3″) long.
VISUAL SIGNALS
If boat is over 6m
One (1) watertight flashlight
Six (6) flares of Type A, B, C or D, not more than two (2) of which are Type D

VESSEL SAFETY EQUIPMENT
One (1) bailer

OR

One (1) manual bilge pump

Bilge-pumping arrangements
NAVIGATION EQUIPMENT
One (1) sound-signalling device or appliance
Navigation lights

One (1) magnetic compass

One (1) radar reflector

NAVIGATION LIGHT AND SHAPE REQUIREMENTS

OPTION 1

An electric torch or lighted lantern showing a white light (a watertight flashlight is acceptable) ready to use far enough in advance to prevent a collision

Note:
Boats under 7m are not required to show prescribed lights and marks, except in or near a narrow channel, fairway or anchorage, or where other vessels normally navigate.

NIGHT ANCHOR

• One (1) all-round white light.

OPTIONAL – Another all-round white light at or near the stern and at a lower level than the other light

NOTE: You may use any available lights to illuminate decks


DAY ANCHOR

• One (1) ball
